Abstract:

Background and Aim : Hookah (water-pipe) smoking is an old method of smoking in many countries particularly in Iran. In recent years, hookahs have grown widely across the world. Global statistics suggests that hookahs have become a social phenomenon. This study was conducted to determine the pattern of hookah consumption in Birjand city, 2017-2018.Methods : In this cross-sectional study, 380 hookah smokers who lived in Birjand and smoked at least once a hookah during the last month were entered into the study using convenience sampling method. The data collection tool was Heinz’ hookah patterns questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis statistical tests. Results : The mean age of participants was 26.35 ± 6.71 years. Approximately 25% of subjects stated that the age of onset of hookah was 19-20 years and 86% did not consider themselves addicted to hookah. The pattern of consumption was significantly higher in men than in women (p <0.001). Also, in university education was significantly higher than other levels of education (p = 0.022) and was higher in people who smoked cigarette (p <0.001).However, there was no significant relationship with age (p = 0.2) and marital status (p = 0.6).Conclusion : Considering the fact that most of the subjects assumed themselves not addicted to hookah, therefore, notification about severe addiction of hookah should be done. Also, educational interventions to increase the perceived risk of hookah in comparison with cigarettes and the negative attitude toward hookah in order to reduce of its consumption, especially in young people appear to be beneficial.
