Abstract:

Background and Aim : : Research conducted in Iran suggests that a quarter of the country’s students tend to use drugs, of which five percent are drug addicts. Measuring parent-related factors that prepare the ground or influence substance use in students and planning to prevent those factors, at the first step, need a valid measurement tool consistent with the cultural, social, and religious characteristics of the community. This study aimed to design and evaluate a tool to measure parent-related factors that influence substance use among high school students based on the Pender’s health promotion model. Methods : This methodological study was conducted on 336 parents of high school students in Sabzevar city, Iran, in 2018. Items of the questionnaire were developed using literature research, interview with experts, and similar questionnaires. Face validity was measured by ten parents. Content validity (both quantitative and qualitative) was assessed by a group of local experts. Construct validity of the questionnaire was also tested through confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability of the questionnaire was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient and test-retest methods. SPSS ver. 16 and LISREL software were used for statistical analysisResults : : The first draft of the questionnaire, including 136 items, was developed. During different stages of evaluation, 36 items of the questionnaire were removed, and the final 100-item questionnaire was developed. The results showed that the content validity index was 0.81 overall, Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.85 overall, and intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.78. The goodness of fit indices showed acceptable fit for the model (df = 3781, RMSEA = 0.069, Chi-Square = 10468, goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.60, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.83, Non-Normed Fit Index (NNFI) = 0.83).Conclusion : The final questionnaire was considered to be a psychometrically sound, reliable, and valid tool to measure parent-related factors influencing substance use in high school students.
