PSYCHOSOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINANTS OF RELAPSE IN DRUG USERS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract:

Background and Aim : Drug addiction is a complex issue and has been a serious public health problem in the world and relapse rate among abstinent drug users is very high. The purpose of this study was to clarify the psychosocial and environmental determinants of relapse to drug use in drug users by reviewing the relevant literature.Methods : We searched all published studies up to June 2018 in both English and Persian on the psychosocial determinants related to relapse of substance use, were investigated. Studies were extracted using the Cochrane search strategy. In order to collecting data, the data extraction form was designed based on the purpose of the research and was used. A literature search in 9 databases – Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Psychinfo, Embase, Science Direct as well as Magiran, Iran Medex and SID – was conducted. All searches were limited to papers published in English and Persian.Results : Our search detected a total of 3491 studies. 40 studies met the inclusion criteria. According to the results, among the determinants of relapse of drug use, the most frequency was related to change in social environment , this determinant in the results of 29 out of 40 studies was the most frequent among the determinants of relapse of drug , After that, participatory dialogue in the results of 18 studies was one of the determinants of relapse to drug use, then respectively emotional transformation in 14 studies, change in physical environment in 11 studies, practice for change in 10 studies, self-efficacy in 9 studies, and finally the temptation in 8 studies Were the main determinants of relapse of drug use.Conclusion : Considering the identification of the most important factors influencing relapse in drug use in the present study, it seems that designing educational interventions based on the results of this study can be beneficial
