Abstract:
Seismic engineering provides design and construction techniques so that buildings and other structures can survive the tremendous forces of earthquakes. While codes and design practices have resulted in greatly improved designs of new buildings, the main danger lies in the nation s inventory of existing vulnerable buildings. Engineering systems in a building provide services to maintain functionality within the building. In hospital buildings, these systems are required to support critical lifesaving functions and continue to function during and after an earthquake and hence they are to be carefully designed and constructed to maintain their operational continuity. Steel shear walls could provide engineers with an effective option for the seismic retrofit older buildings. This system could be installed quickly and eliminate the need to disrupt the occupants of existing structures, they would be even more desirable, especially in the context of a hospital retrofit. This report presents information on performance of steel shear walls under seismic effects and suggests to use this system in Seismic Retrofitting of Hospitals.
