Abstract:

Background and purpose: Pressure ulcers have been identified as one of the most important and challenging issues in health care centers and one of the major threats to patient safety and well-being. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of rosemary ointment on grade I pressure ulcer in patients hospitalized in the ICU section.Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial,70 patients who were eligible for inclusion criteria were selected purposively and assigned to groups by stratified randomization. In the intervention group, rosemary ointment was applied once a day for seven days. Control group received the routine care. Data were collected using personal information questionnaire and Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) and analyzed using independent t-test, Chi-square and repeated measurements ANOVA by SPSS 18 software. Results: There was a significant difference between the mean scores of PUSH between two groups one week after the intervention (P=0.001). During this time, the mean wound size in the intervention group decreased significantly, but in the control group remained unchanged (P=0.001). The effect of time and interactive effect was also significant (P=0.001). Comparison of complete ulcer healing frequency in two groups using Chi-square test showed a significant difference between two groups(p=0.004).Conclusion: Rosemary ointment prevented the development of the first grade pressure ulcer and its improvement in the studied patients. Therefore, the use of this ointment is recommended for the prevention and improvement of pressure ulcers.
