Abstract:

Introduction: Chronic wounds is defined as a wound that can take at least three months to recover. Chronic wounds are one of the most costly unsolved problems of health and are considered a problem in the health care system in the world, as estimated in the United States these wounds affect approximately 2% of the total population. In recent years, effective alternative methods using traditional medicine for the treatment of chronic wounds have been proposed which have been welcomed by patients. Among these methods is the use of various herbs for wound healing, including aloe vera due to its disinfectant and cleansing properties in the wound area. Therefore, this review study aimed to investigate the effect of Aloe vera plant on healing of chronic wounds. Methods: This study used Pubmed and Embase databases and Science Direct and Google Scholar sites to review the sources. The search was performed using a combination of aloe vera gel, healing, wound and chronic keywords in published articles from 2000 to the end. Finally, the study was written using information from 24 articles. Results: The findings showed that consumption of aloe vera can accelerate the process of wound healing, accelerate epithelialization, as well as reduce pain and bleeding and exert anti-inflammatory properties. Conclusions: A review of studies has shown that aloe vera in topical or even oral gel is effective in treating chronic wound and accelerating its healing process. Since nurses can use complementary and alternative medicine to provide patient care, this method can be welcomed with lower cost and greater effectiveness.
