خلاصه مقاله:
Background and Objective: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people over the age of 15 consume an average of 6.2 liters of pure alcohol during a year. A Longterm use ethanol causes dangerous sub-metabolites for example, ROS (reactive oxygen species), which can damage DNA and proteins and disrupt cell division, the purpose of this study is investigating the effect of alcohol consumption on the morphology and tissue of salivary glands.Search Method: This study was systematically carried out using the keywords alcohol ، ethanol and salivary gland based on Mesh in PubMed, Scopus and Clinical Key which wasdone between 2000- 2019. 31 articles were found and after reviewing article and abstract, 8 ofthem were selected for compelet review.Findings: Two articles explained that chronic alcohol consumption caused globular granules in secreted asinos. Three articles stated that alcohol is a major cause of sialadenosis. Most articles also indicated that alcohol increases cell death and causes problems in saliva production. One article stated that alcohol causes the reduction of myoepithelial cells in parotid glands and sub-mandibular and another article said that alcohol increases luminal cell by increasing caspase-3 expression. Two articles also mentioned that alcohol increases the expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) and increases the apoptosis of salivary gland cells. It was also observed irregular layering of the basal layer. Conclusion: According to the reviewed articles, excessive consumption of alcohol causes disruption of cell division and changes in the morphology of salivary glands which decrease salivary secretion and it causes various oral diseases and also disrupts the normal function of the salivary glands.
