Antifungal and cytotoxicity potentials of aqueous extract of Larrea tridentata

Abstract:

Introduction: Medicinal plants are used on a large scale in medicine against drug-resistant fungi, which are considered one of the most important reasons for the lack of success of treatment in infectious diseases. Medicinal plants are the major sources of new medicines and may constitute an alternative to the usual drugs. They are used in many industries, including food preservation, pharmacy, and medicine. In this regard, Larrea tridentata has been used in traditional medicine as a remedial supplement.Methods: After identification of the plant, its aqueous extract was obtained using Soxhlet extractor without leaving any chemicals in it. The collected extract was filtered by Whatman filter paper no 1 and steamed into a glass container at the solvent temperature. The remaining dried extract was poured into a glass container and weighed. The powder of the obtained extract weighed as required depending on the dilation and dissolved in distilled water.Results: Indeed, compared with all standard antibiotics, the L. tridentata aqueous extract, in high dilutions, revealed higher antifungal potential (p≤0.01) against C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, and C. guilliermondii. The synthesized aqueous extract had great cell viability dose-dependently (With investigating the effect of the plant on Hela, MCF-7, and HEK-293 cell lines) and indicated this method was nontoxic for synthesizing L. tridentata aqueous extract.Conclusion: Seemingly, because of L. tridentata aqueous extract antifungal and non-cytotoxic potentials, it can be used as a medical supplement for prevention, control, and treatment of fungal disease.
