Abstract:

Background. RBCs are the most widely transfused blood component world wide. Stored RBCs are damaged by the accumulation of their own waste products that is called Red blood cell storage lesion (RSL) which includes: RBC morphologic changes, hemolysis, energy and metabolism loss, altered oxygen release and shedding of toxic products that is lead to reduce RBC viability. The aim of this study is to evaluate some biochemical parameters in RBC concentrates during storage under blood bank condition.Material&method. In this study, 8 packed RBCs bags from 8 male healthy donor between 30-40 years old were prepared and stored at 2-6 degree centigrade for up to 42 days.we studied some biochemical and hematological parameters in RBC during different period of storage ,include day0,2,7,14,21,28,35,42.Conclusion. The assessment of RBCs during storage under blood bank condition showed significant increase in free Hemoglobin(Hb) due to hemolysis (p,0.05) , Hematocrit (HCT) ,Calcium (Ca) , phosphorus (p) ,iron (Fe) , Magnesium (Mg) , Lactate , Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) , potassium (K) ,Total Antioxidant Capacity( TAC) , While a significant decrease in plasma sodium (Na ) and Glucose (p<0.05).Discussion. RBC storage is associated with important changes which influence biochemical and Hematological parameters and may cause negative outcomes after blood transfusion.
