Abstract:

Background and Aim : Pain management can result in better outcomes in traumatic patients inemergency ward. Use of non-opioids would help to reduce opioid use and its adverse effects.Regarding the importance of this issue, in this study, the effects of ketamine as an adjunct to opioidfor pain control in traumatic patients were evaluated in a tertiary health case center. Methods : This double-blind randomized clinical trial was performed among 160 traumaticpatients in Besat hospital ED, Tehran, Iran in 2018. These cases were randomly enrolled andassigned to receive opioid plus either ketamine or placebo in order to control their pain, The painwas recorded up to 120 minutes and compared between the groups. Results : It was indicated that the pain was significantly reduced in both groups (P=0.001).However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding thepain reduction trend according to a Repeated-measure ANOVA analysis (P=0.275).Conclusion : In conclusion, it may be implied that there is no additional effect for ketamine as anadjunct to opioid for pain control in traumatic patients.
