Abstract:

Background and Aim : Determination of effective methods to reduce the postoperative pain is an issue ofimportance specially to improve the satisfaction rate after hysterectomy.Methods : In this interventional study that was done as a randomized clinical trial, 140 consecutive womenattending Shohada-e-Tajrish Hospital in Tehran for hysterectomy were enrolled and randomly assigned toreceive either gabapentin 300 mg orally or placebo and then the postoperative pain, analgesic requirement,and side effects were determined and compared across the groups.Results : The results in this study demonstrated that postoperative pain and analgesic requirement weresignificantly less in women in gabapentin group (P < 0.05) and the other variables were alike across thegroups (P > 0.05).Conclusion : Totally, according to the obtained results it may be concluded that gabapentin is an effectiveand safe method for pain relief after hysterectomy. Hence use of this method is recommended in clinicalsetting.
