Abstract:

Background and Aim : Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder, affecting5%–15% of women during their reproductive period and is characterized by hyperandrogenism,oligoovulation or anovulation, polycystic ovaries, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. severalstudies have shown that, women with PCOS report a reduced quality of life, score higher on depressionsymptom scales, and have higher rates of depression diagnoses and can affect females s psychologicalfunctioning and satisfaction with life. Also Neuroticism is a personality trait that has been associated withan increased risk for developing major depressive disorder (MDD). The aim of this study is to review therelationship between personality and psychological problems with pcos.Methods : we have done systemic review by searching in related search engine ( google scholar, pubmed,scincedirect, sid, magiran) and review of related article.Results : in a cohort study in Sweden(2019), that has shown Females with PCOS had significantly higherlevels of neuroticism than healthy women (7.90 ±4.9 versus 5.78 ± 4.3) and a 2-fold increase in odds for alifetime prevalence of major depressive disorder(MDD). 33.9% of women with PCOS had MDD comparedwith 20.9% who did not have PCOS. In another of case–control study in iran(2019), has shown Infertilefemale with PCOS had a higher mean score of trait anxiety than those without PCOS(46.19±5.29vs44.49±f5.13, P=0.004). The PCOS personality traits of PCOS infertile women were not different regardingneuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness. The only exception was that infertile PCOSwomen had of signicantly higher mean score of openness to experience than those without PCOS(P=0.049).The result of a study, that was examined the Personality and psychiatric disorders in women affected bypolycystic ovary syndrome, has shown MCMI-III evidenced axis II DSM-IV personality disorders [4.1%schizoid, depressive, sadistic, negativistic (passive–aggressive), and masochistic, 6.1% avoiding, 12.2%dependent, 20.4% histrionic, 16.3% narcissistic, 2.0% obsessive–compulsive], and axis I DSM-IVpsychiatric disorders: 10.2% anxiety, 2.0% somatoform disorder and bipolar dis-order, 16.3% majordepressive disorder.Conclusion : the majority of studies showed, PCOS women have relevant personality and psychologydisorders, when compared with healthy women. Some studies showed a linkage between psychologicaldisorders and major clin - ical PCOS symptoms, such as excessive body hairs, acne, infertility, or excessivebody weight.so Psychological therapy should be considered as a permanent element in the therapeutic planprovided to PCOS women.
