Abstract:

Background and Aim : The advances in science and technology and the development of new ways ofinfertility, such as IVF, have opened the door for infertile couples, but have forced them to endure morestress and longer treatment periods. Self-concept and self- discrepancy are able to investigate thepsychological aspects of every person and therefore, we decided to study these measures on women whotreated with IVF and fertile women. Methods : In this comparative investigation, 53 women were investigated in each of the women who treatedwith IVF and fertile women using the available Sampling method. The data were collected by a three partquestionnaire including demographic questions, self-concept scale and self- discrepancy scale questions(consisting of ideals and have to be self- discrepancy data). The data were analyzed through SPSS16and by use of statistical tests including Chi-square and T-test.Results : The results showed that self-concept and self-discrepancy scores in a higher percentage ofindividuals in the IVF group were negative. The difference in self-concept score between the two groupswas statistically significant (p = 0.045). There was a significant differences between the three groupsregarding the have to be part of self-discrepancy data (p=0.02) and ideal part of the self-discrepancydata (p=0.005).Conclusion : According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that infertility and treatment withIVF, it weakens the self-concept and self -discrepancy. Therefore, authorities should consider measures toassess the psychological dimensions and counseling and support of infertile women treated with IVF .
