Abstract:

Introduction: Studies have shown that malnutrition plays an important role in the development of body mass and mobility reduction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between malnutrition and physical activity level and BMI in Tehran s elderly living in nursing homes. Method: In this descriptive study, 468 elderly people from different centers of nursing homes in Tehran were randomly selected. After evaluating of the Alzheimer s and Dementia status, 131 subjects (93 females and 38 males) were participated in this study. At first demographic questionnaire was collected and recorded. The anthropometric indices such as weight, height and body mass index were measured and recorded. Finally, Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly Questionnaire (PASE) and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were used to assess physical activity level and malnutrition, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed by SPSS software version 21 and significant level P<0.05. Results: The results of the statistical analysis showed an inverse relationship between malnutrition with physical activity(p<0/05) and BMI(p<0/05). Conclusion: Regarding the results of the present study, it can be stated that using a proper diet for these special subjects can greatly prevent disability and muscle mass reduction such as Sarcopenia.
