Abstract:

This study sought to evaluate of Interchange Series in terms of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) principles. To conduct the research, this study took a descriptive approach and data analysis was conducted with a comprehensive content analysis of the materials,using both macro and micro analytic techniques, in order to get a thorough picture of evaluation process of the textbook, Interchange Third Edition Level 1. Macro analysis conducted with the four-aspect framework adapted from Savignon’s guidelines on material evaluation and micro analysis also conducted with the researcher-developed criteria on the basis of CLT principles which consist of communicative language use, authenticity, culture, fluency and accuracy, treating language skills. The findings of macro evaluation revealed that the book was suitable to the students’ age and proficiency. The layout was interesting and consistent, the illustrations were concise and mostly relevant, and it was found that the chosen vocabularies were mainly application words. Moreover, it was found that the components of the book was balanced regarding the grammatical and communicative oriented tasks. The micro evaluation revealed that the book’s attempt to be communicative somehow successful and the book was 63.33 percent based on communicative principles
