Abstract:

The objective of this study was to examine the role of gender in high and low socioeconomic status in the rate of interaction in mixed-gender groups. To fulfill the aim of this study, the researchers employed a socioeconomic status questionnaire and voice recording while students were doing a group work activity. Convenience sampling design was employed to select the participants of this study. The research sample consisted of 80 EFL learners who were more or less homogeneous. Two-ways ANOVA and Three-ways ANOVA were applied to analyze the data. The results of this study indicated that the female learners with low socioeconomic status tended to have lower interactions in mixed-gender groups. Female learners with high socio economic status had more participation than the ones with low socio economic status in mixed gender groups, but they also interacted more in dyad groups. Male learners with high and low socioeconomic status did not differ significantly in their interactions in mixed gender groups. The implication of the finding is that learners tend less to participate more in mixed-gender groups, but if the teacher wants to arrange them in mixed-gender groups, he or she should give them more chances for interactions and should pay attention to the tendency of learners toward learning
