Abstract:

Objective: the aim of this study was to measure the amount of lead in the Iranian-made and imported lipsticks present in the Iranian market.Materials and methods: In this applied study, 32 brands of lipsticks were collected from Iranian markets and were tested for lead concentration with atomic absorption spectrofotometer. Statistical analysis including ANOVA tests were conducted by SPSS Software after digestion of samples.Results: the results showed a significant difference between levels of lead in different brands, there was no relationship between price and average of lead level in this study. Average lead level of the Iranian brands was greater than that the imported ones (about 1.8 times). Interestingly, these results are opposed to the results derived from other similar studies conducted earlier in Iran. The least amounts of lead were related to the imported brands which are 0.011.The highest average level of lead (1.374) was detected in the Iranian made brands.Conclusion: Based on the results it can be claimed that imported brands have less lead level compared to foreign brands. Since the amount of lead in Iranian brands is high, special control must be exerted on the Iranian cosmetic products. Also, it is necessary to take appropriate measures to control importation of poor quality cosmetic to the country.
