BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vitamin C is used most frequently for preventing the general cold. Some people have it for different infections including gum illness, acne and superior respiratory infections such as Pharyngitis and common cold. It is needed for the operation of various enzymes and is crucial for immune system use. It also works as the antioxidant. On the other hand, Vitamin A is rich foods that promote lung health, And both A and C are antioxidants that counteract free groups in our structure, critical for the prevention of human diseases. Inferior respiratory tract infections (IRTI) is inflammation of the air passages within the lungs. Trachea (windpipe) and the large & small bronchi (airways) within the lungs become inflamed because of the infection. It divided into 2 types: Bronchitis & Pneumonia SEARCH METHOD: Pubmed and Google Scholar search engines were searched for Vitamin C , Vitamin A , and respiratory infections , and the review articles of the last 5 years (2015-2019) were selected. Out of the total 263 articles found, 153 articles were only available in Abstract form and 110 articles had been presented in full text. Among them 20 articles that was more related to this study, were selected. FINDINGS:The findings of studies showed that vitamin C and vitamin A have protective effects on several diseases, especially respiratory infections. We selected elderly patients because of their higher that have contactacting to environmental pollutants such as smoking. It has proved that immunosuppressant patient had more risk to get cold and infections. In this study we evaluated the effects of Vitamin C and Vitamin A on elderly patients morbid to IRTI like pneumonia and bronchitis. In other studies informed that vitamin C & vitamin A had protective effect on patients with upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) such as pharyngitis and common cold, but there was no study about relationship between these two vitamins and IRTI. CONCLUSION:According to protective effects of Vitamin C & Vitamin A in URTI, promotingimmune system and result of this study, we conclude that these vitamins have good effect on preventing and treating the infections of respiratory tract especially in elderly patients that encounter with pollutant.
