Abstract:

Smart city movements are growing all over the world. The undertaking is expected to solve a plethora of problems arising from urbanization. To achieve the transformation of traditional cities into smart cities, waste management becomes a critical element in achieving sustainability, efficiency in public spending, improving urban mobility, and preserving natural resources. This study considered the physical and operational feasibility of smart waste collection system in the most densely populated city in Iran, i.e. Tehran, with pneumatic tubes for the collection of multiple municipal solid waste fractions from a variety of public and private sources. Results showed that pneumatic waste collection system would be physically and operationally practicable in Tehran. The proposed system will save time, money and efforts compared to the traditional process of the waste management system and improve the society quality as all.
