Abstract:

Mixed mode I/II fracture of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement with biomedical applications is investigated from both experimental and theoretical points of view. In order to conduct the experiments, shortened semi-circular bend (SSCB) specimens with different crack inclination angles resulting in pure mode I, pure mode II and mixed mode I/II loading configurations are employed. A newly developed crack growth model named generalized strain energy density (GSED) criterion is next utilized to predict the experimental fracture loads. It is shown that the GSED criterion which considers the T-term in the calculations can successfully anticipate the fracture while the traditional model of strain energy density (SED) that neglects the effect of T-stress, may have significant errors in its fracture estimations
