Abstract:

The effect of shear stresses in deformation and delamination of thin film structures is essential in their application in technology and industry. A thin film coated cylinder is composed of a cylindrical shaft/tube coated by a thin film which provides special characteristics for the system. Such modelings are useful in natural structures like blood vessels and industrial components as pipes in fluid transmission lines and transmission shafts especially in micro-nano systems. Detaching the thin layers of coating may lead to destructive effects on the applicability and efficiency of the system which needs special attention. In this research, a long shaft coated with a film is modeled in ANSYS and the shear stress developed through the interface of the bi-layer system is investigated. The shaft is bounded at one end, and an external torque is applied on the other end. For different materials, the finite element model is solved through static analysis and the stress field developed at the interface and also through the coating is studied
