Abstract:

Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt (MIAB) welding is a solid-state welding method used in circular butt welding of tubes. In this process, heat is generated before upsetting by an electric arc moving along the peripheral edges with the aid of an external magnetic field. In this research, a fundamental attempt is being made to determine the feasibility of welding alloy steel tubes by employing MIAB welding. Several trials are conducted to create an optimal parameter window for the MIAB welding process by varying the different input parameters. The process parameters were varied while checking the impact on the weld bead and penetration (examined visually). It is observed that there is no proper fusion of tubes when the T2 time and the I2 current are low, leading to insufficient heat input. Further, the strength of MIAB welded specimens is examined by subjecting the welded specimens to various destructive tests. It is observed that the weld region is stronger than the base metal.
