Abstract:

Introduction & Aim: Gastric, esophagus, and colorectal cancers are the fifth, eighth and third most common cancer in the world, respectively. The aim of this study was Investigation of five year survival rate and epidemiologic features in patients with gastrointestinal cancers in west Azerbijan province. Methods: A total number of 166 patients with esophageal cancer, 263 patients with stomach cancer and 96 patients with colorectal cancer registered in Cancer Registration System of West Azarbaijan Province in 2005 were investigated. Survival analyses were performed by the Kaplan-Meier method. A Cox’s proportional hazards model was fitted to the data. The data were analyzed using the Stata v.11software Results: The 5 year survival rates in the patients with gastric, esophagus, and colorectal cancers were 10.8%, 4.6% and 32.3%, respectively. Age, sex, place of residence, education, economic status, smoking, and insurance status did not show any significant effects on the survival rate of patients with gastric and colorectal cancer . In multivariate analysis, only the individual s insured status was remained as an independent factor on the survival rate for esophageal cancer.Conclusion: Survival rate of gastric, esophagus, and colorectal cancers cases in west Azerbijan province is low. Intervention for early detection and therapy is necessary to increase survival
