Abstract:Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths across the world. Prevalent inconsistencies in the association of the high-risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection with lung cancer were found.We evaluated the frequency of HPV positivity in squamous cell carcinoma in an open case control study. Methods: 50 recently diagnosed patients with SCC of the lung were selected for HPV DNA extraction from paraffin-embedded blocks. HPV DNA detection was performed by nested-PCR with the MY09/11 and GP5+/6+ primer sets. DNA was then sequenced for the determination of high-risk HPV types.Saliva samples of 94 control cancer-free subjects were collected for DNA analysis. Results: High risk HPV was detected in 9 (18 %) patients and 6 (5.3%) control subjects, which was proven to be statistically significant. HPV-18 was the most frequent type both in the cases and controls. HPV-6 DNA was detected in one patient from each of the case group and the controls. Conclusion: HPV infection has a significant impact on NSCLC. Despite HPV-16 having a stronger impact, HPV-18 is more likely to cause malignant degeneration in such cancers amongst some communities. It is vital to introduce and conduct immunization schedules in health care systems to protect communities to some extent.
