Abstract:

Background: Mucinous carcinoma ,also known as colloid carcinoma, is one of the rare pathological categories in breast cancer. We performed a study to compare clinicopathologic features and outcome of Pure Mucinous carcinoma (PMC) patients with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) and Mixed Mucinous carcinoma (MMC). Methods: We reviewed the records of 3807 patients diagnosed with breast carcinoma who were identified from 1994 to 2015 referred to Shiraz Breast Diseases Research Center. Among them, 42 patients with PMC were compared to 3087 patients with IDC. Furthermore, 42 patients with PMC were compared to 12 patients with MMC. Results: There were statistical significant differences in pathological grade, lymphovascular invasion, Her-2 expression, TNM staging and patientsʼ age between PMCs and IDCs (P<0.05). There were statistical significant differences in pathological grade, tumor size and TNM staging between PMCs and MMCs (P<0.05). 450/3807 (15.8%) of IDCs and 1/42 (2.4%) of PMCs were developed recurrences. Also, 244/3807 (8.6%) of IDCs died while none of Mucinous carcinomas was expired. The 5-year Overall Survival and Disease Free Survival of patients with mucinous carcinoma was 100% as compared with 87.7% and 78.4% for patients with IDC, respectively. Conclusion: In our study, Mucinous carcinoma had a better prognosis than IDCs. A larger data samples are necessary to achieve reliable findings of this particular tumor.
