Abstract:

As the plastic deformation is effective in the generation of wear debris in the repeated contact of two surface asperities the wear process can be modeled by a low cycle fatigue mechanism based on cyclic plastic strain. In the present work, a new micro-scale finite element model was designed in order to modelthe sliding of a hard surface on an as-cast eutectoid steel. Then, it was tried to predict the Archard’s wear coefficient based on the strain field results and the low cycle fatigue theory. In addition, experiments were carried out by the rotating pin-on-disk tribometer. Finally, the predicted results were compared with theexperimental ones and a good agreement was found at low applied forces. The SEM examinations revealed that at high applied forces, the oxidation of the surfaces is appeared causing the predicted results deviate from the reality
