Cancer and ozone therapy

Ozone (O3) is a gas discovered in the mid 19th century. It exists in the atmosphere and protects the creatures from ultraviolet (UV) radiations; however, it breaks down into oxygen and a single reactiveatom of oxygen quickly, especially at lower atmospheric levels. It is formed from oxygen naturally through electrical discharges. For medical administrations, it (a mixture of ozone and oxygen) is produced in ozone generators by passing oxygen through a high voltage grade.Although it was used as a disinfectant agent by late 19th century, several theories have been proposed according to its therapeutic effects on human body regarding cancer prevention and combating to tumor cells. As ozone turns rapidly into O2 and a single free oxygen atom in the blood vessels, it could work as an oxidative atom which may neutralize other free harmful radicals in the body. Furthermore, it could stimulate immune system producing more Gamma interferon, TNF (tumor necrotic factor) and IL-2 (Interleukin 2) which are quite crucial for our body against pathogens like viruses, bacteria and fungi.There are different ways of administration including nasal, oral, auricular, rectal, intravaginal andintraarticular routes or cutaneous application; however, the main method of administration specifically related to cancer is ozone autohaemotherapy (mixing ozone with withdrawn blood and reinjection into the patient s vain).A series of in-vitro studies and those involving ozone-oxygen therapy in animal models have shown effects such as a dose-dependent prevention of the human cancer cells growth from breast, lung and uterine tumors; nevertheless, further studies are still needed in preparation for clinical trials.Therefore, the aim of this paper is to review recent attempts on introducing ozone therapy and its effects on cancer. Based on some advantages of ozone therapy _Ozone stimulates the production of TNF, Ozone is antineoplastic, Ozone makes the anti-oxidant enzyme system more efficient, Ozone degrades petrochemicals, etc_ and regarding many cases reports this method can be considered as a safe way for healing cancer
