Abstract:

Vitamin D is derived from both exposure to sunlight and dietary sources and It is essential for bone health, and enough level can decrease the risk of hip fracture in women, as well as there is someevidence that vitamin D affects other body systems such as liver and kidney diseases, digestive health, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and metabolic syndrome, and so sufficient resources of vitamin D areneeded for optimal health. There are many investigations about the association of vitamin D and cancer. Although the link between vitamin D and breast cancer is still unclear, there is some growingevidence that vitamin D may decrease the risk. A literature search in different databases, including PubMed, scholar and Scopus was done for evaluating the relation between vitamin D and the prevention of breast cancer. Epidemiologic, animal and clinical studies indicated that vitamin D levels is essential to protect against the growth of breast cancer. A recent assessment showed that dairy calcium and total vitamin D consumption were reverse linked with breast cancer risk among premenopausal women. Whereas, three studies did not find a relation between vitamin D consumption and the risk for breast cancer. Some in vitro studies demonstrate that vitamin D can inhibit cell proliferation and promote apoptosis and cell differentiation in breast tumor tissue. So it was showed that high consumption of vitamin D can decrease the risk of breast cancer; whereas, this relationship was not compatible between studies. Vitamin D is essential in many physiologic processes. Although the relation between breast cancer and vitamin D is still unclear, research currently supports vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor for breast cancer. Further research is also needed to determine the association between vitamin D and the risk of breast cancer
