Abstract:
At Caltech, and then at the Georgia Institute of Technology, my research group and I created the first Embodied Cultured Networks. These are hybrids of living neuronal tissue and computers. We gave the cultured networks bodies that were sometimes simulated animals, sometimes actual robots. I will describe how we used closed-loop hybrid systems to study learning and neuronal dynamics at the network level. I will also present my predictions for the future of AI (artificial intelligence) that will incorporate more and more brain-inspired systems, perhaps even actual living neural networks.
