Abstract:
Concrete is undoubtedly one of the most basic materials that owes a large part to human development. The second most commonly used substance in the world after water. The reason is the unique properties of concrete. Advantages of concrete include high compressive strength, ductility, availability of raw materials, heat resistance and longevity. But concrete has one major disadvantage and its tensile strength is negligible. This causes it to crack under different conditions. This material needs maintenance and repair to prevent cracking and crack development in concrete and to prevent corrosion of reinforced concrete bars. Self-healing based on microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation has been proposed as a smart and environmentally friendly strategy for the repair of concrete cracks. It is advisable to incorporate bacteria-based healing agents in fresh state concrete during mixing. This study reviews the formation of self-healing concrete and the process of calcium carbonate precipitation in concrete.
