Classification of some plant species according to CSR theory in Markazi province (Phase 1) abstract

The classification of plant species according to the CSR ecological strategy scheme was studied in Haftadgholeh and Meyghan playa of Arak. Sampling was carried out randomly in different vegetation types and the characteristics of plant species were recorded according to Hodgson et al., 1999 method. Then, with the entry of this data in Spreadsheet in Excel, the strategy of species were determined. A total number of 171 vascular plant taxa belonging to 46 families and 136 genera were studied. Asteraceae (with 23 species), Poaceae (with 21 species), Lamiaceae (with 12 species) were the largest families. The life form spectrum, based on Raunkiaer system, revealed that Hemicryptophytes and Therophytes have been the most dominant life forms. The floristic composition of the area is strongly influenced by large number of Irano-Turanian elements. The most important strategies were competitive-ruderal (CR) (36.5%), competitive-stress tolerant (CS) (18.8%) and competitive/competitive-ruderal (C/CR) (12.9%). Few species (4 species, especially tree and shrub species present in less intact areas of Haftadgholeh), exhibited a purely competitive (C) strategy. Increasing of competitive/ ruderal group strategies such as CR, C/CR, R/CR and CR/CSR in these areas, can be due to the relative protection and the grazing of wild and domestic livestock. Also, the stress caused by gradients of ecological characteristics of studied areas such as soil salinity changes, altitude changes and different geographical directions in habitats of plants, increased the frequency of stress tolerance group strategies such as SC, C/SC, S/SC, SC/CSR, SR and SR/CSR. However, grazing in these areas has also been affected on the adoption of stress tolerate/ ruderal strategies by plants. Finally, it was evaluated that the CSR classification model can be successfully applied to determine the responses of plant species to changing environmental factors patterns and disturbance factors.Key words: Competition, Disturbance, Grime’s strategies, Plant functional types, Stress.
