Abstract:
In this paper, a vibration-based damage detection approach is proposed using active structural control. The introduced parametric method, detect, locate, and quantify damage by comparing the dynamic parameters of a damaged structure, mainly control forces, with a virtually healthy system under earthquake loads. Structural optimalactive control forces are determined by the Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control scheme based on the parameters of the damaged and undamaged structures. Then, local feedback controllers actuate structures to track the response signals, the input/output signals are then processed to assess structural damage, and to make decisions on thestructural health. An evaluation index, that is, relative root mean square (RRMS) error, is presented to evaluate the condition of structure for health monitoring. The effectiveness of the parametric vibration-based identification is evaluated through numerical simulations. It is shown that the parametric evaluation method has the potential of being a practical tool for a damage detection methodology applied to structures .
