Abstract:
Total knee replacement (TKR) is challenging research nowadays due to increasing concerns about the growing aging population. The selection of a high-quality replacement in this application is very important to avoid another surgery to replace the new prosthesis. The material selection in biomechanics applications is a demanding process that needs a lot of experience and time to decide the best material since the replacement would be in direct contact with the body. There are several material selection methods available for designers developed based on different concepts and levels of complexity. Several quantitative and qualitative properties such as compatibility and accessibility as well as mechanical properties affect the decision-making of materials for biomechanics applications. In this study, three material selection methods i.e. Digital Logic (DL), Modified Digital Logic (MDL), and fuzzy methods are implemented to calculate a material ranking for TKR. The acquired results are also compared to the suggested rankings in the literature and the possible differences are discussed.
