Abstract:

In this paper, nanoclay (Cloisite۱۵A) and nanotalc were studied as reinforcing fillers in Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)/carbon black with average diameter of ۳۰ nm (N۳۳۰). The compounds were mechanically mixed and cured with an efficient sulfur/accelerator curing system. Compared to vulcanized EPDM/CB, these fillers showed a strong influence on the solvent resistance in ۲-dimethylaminoethylazide as polar solvent and tensile strength, while the elongation at break was almost retained. Interestingly, the mechanical properties and solvent resistance of filled EPDM was found to be much higher than the EPDM/CB. The results indicated that fillers with high specific surface area is much effective enhancing tensile strength (up to ۲۰.۹% increase), elongation at break(up to ۱۹.۷% increase) and high solvent resistance(up to ۴۲.۷% increase) due to strong interfacial interaction between filler and matrix for EPDM elastomers processed by mechanical mixing.
