Abstract:
Phytochemical and antimicrobial analysis of Moringa oleifera seeds were carried using standard laboratory procedures. The phytochemical content showed the presence of alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, and steroids respectively as samples contained ۵.۸۵g alkaloid, ۵.۹۷g flavonoid, and ۱.۴۶g saponin. Anti-microbial screening with certain selected human pathogens and the zones of inhibition obtained showed that alkaloids were ۳mm, ۳mm, ۲mm, ۴mm, & ۵mm, flavonoids were ۶mm, ۵mm, ۴mm, ۲mm and ۷mm and saponins were ۴mm, ۳mm, ۳mm, ۶mm and ۵mm for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aureginosa, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptocuccus aureus. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) were ۶.۵mg/cm۳, ۱۲.۵mg/cm۳, ۱۲.۵mg/cm۳, ۶.۵mg/cm۳ and ۱۲.۵mg/cm۳ for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aureginosa, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptocuccus aureus respectively. This finding shows that the application of the seed extract of Moringa oleifera for potential therapeutic use and medicinal drugs in treatment of pneumonia, urinary tract infection and a host of other diseases in humans.
