Abstract:

It is very important to assure that the human beings live in a world of hygiene and freshness. The necessities of human beings are not fulfilled with the provision of food, clothing and shelter alone, but it is important that the environment is clean and livable with pure and safe air as well as water. Chemical textile dyes significantly compromise the quality of life, increase biochemical and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD), disrupt photosynthesis, inhibit plant growth, enter the food chain, it causes biological accumulation and bioaccumulation, and may cause toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenesis. Chemical dyeing of handmade carpet fibers, in addition to destroying the quality and reputation of Iranian handmade carpets in the world, also pollutes the environment, soil and running water. Many dyes, though not banned yet, may not be completely safe. Most synthetic dyes are not biodegradable; they accumulate on lands and in river causing ecological problems. In this paper, we have tried to point out some of the environmental damages caused by chemical dyeing of handmade carpets.
