Abstract:

To effectively manage rangelands, it is important to assess ecosystem productivity and biomassproduction. Eight vegetation indices (VIs) including Ratio, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI),Transformed Vegetation Index (TVI), Corrected Transformed Vegetation Index (CTVI), PerpendicularVegetation Index۳ (PVI۳), Transformed Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index۲ (TSAVI۲), Modified Soil-AdjustedVegetation Index۲ (MSAVI۲), Weighted Difference Vegetation Index (WDVI) used for Forage biomass (FB)estimation were derived from Indian Remote Sensing Resource Sat imagery at arid rangeland study site inDeylam, Iran. ۱۰۰ sample locations were selected for the collection of forage biomass. Correlation coefficientsbetween Forage biomass and VIs were calculated. The results demonstrate that biomass was linearly relatedvegetation indices. The higher bare soil (in other hand the lower vegetation cover) is the main factor makingthe FB estimation difficult. These results suggest that Distance Based Vis (e.g. PVI۳) is useful and performedbetter than Slope Based VIs (e.g. WDVI) for estimating Forage biomass in arid rangelands of Iran.
