Inactivation of SARS-CoV-۲ virus in wastewater treatment plants

The world is combating the emergence of Coronavirus disease ۲۰۱۹ (COVID-۱۹) caused by novel coronavirus; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus ۲ (SARS-CoV-۲). Further, due to the presence of SARS-CoV-۲ in sewage its transmission through water routes cannot be neglected.This article presents a literature review of the prevalence of SARS‐CoV‐۲ in wastewater, its environmental fate, recommended treatment strategies for contaminated wastewater, and treatment challenges to be faced in the future. The World Health Organization has recommended the use of ultraviolet radiation (UV), disinfection, and filtration for wastewater contaminated with SARS‐CoV‐۲, processes also common in wastewater treatment facilities.
