Abstract:

Using a flip bucket spillway is one of the practical solutions for energy loss downstream of an overflow. This hydraulic structure throws a falling jet into the air farther from the edge of the flip bucket and then into the basin. The main problem of these structures is that the falling jet with high speed meets the bed, then it causes to transfer of sediment downstream and creates deep scouring holes. While the dimension of the scouring hole gradually develops, it will fail the foundation and collapse the hydraulic structures. Furthermore, the research shows that the tooth at the end of the flip-bucket could reduce the scour hole's dimension. In this research using computational hydraulic modeling, the parameters of the length and depth of the scour hole have been evaluated by the effect of the flow velocity, tail-water depth, amount of opening rate of the gate on top of the spillway, and a tooth at the end of the flip-bucket. Data analysis applying the Python program shows that the presence of a tooth reduces the averagelength of the scour hole by ۵۲.۵۴% compared to the toothless model, and also this factor reduces the depth by ۵۴.۳۸%.
