Abstract:

This study examined roles of fluid intelligence (Gf) and Crystallized intelligence (Gc) in EFL learners’writing ability. To this end, ۸۲ MA students majoring in English language teaching were selected. Threeinstruments were used: Raven Advanced Progressive Matrixes (RAM) as a measure of Gf; verbal scale ofWechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Revised (WAIS-R) as a measure of Gc; and a writing task. The resultsof Pearson correlations showed that both Gc and Gf significantly and positively correlated to theparticipants’ writing scores (rGf = ۰.۵۳۷, rGc = ۰.۴۵۳). Furthermore, multiple regression analysesdemonstrated that Gf (B = ۰.۴۱۷, p < .۰۵) was a better predictor of EFL learners’ writing ability.
