Abstract:

Today, due to their much better properties than metals, composite materials are increasingly used in structural applications, especially in the aerospace and automotive industries. The innovations in composites have made it possible for designers to design structures with much less weight and more strength. Among these, Fiber-Metal Laminate (FML) composites have well-received more attention due to their unique properties in fatigue loading, energy absorption, and impact strength. The most common of these are glass laminate aluminum reinforced epoxy (GLARE), which contains aluminum for metal and glass-reinforced epoxy layers. This paper studies and compares energy absorption in GLARE-۳ and GLARE-۵ composites. For this purpose, impact with different energies, percussion with different masses, different sheet thicknesses, and arrangement of different layers were analyzed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) in Abaqus. However, the results showed that GLARE-۳ benefits from a better energy absorption than GLARE-۵, and therefore where impact loads are high, GLARE-۳ is a more applicable option.
