Abstract:

this paper proposes a new configuration for smallscalewater pumping systems that are fed by wind turbines andPV cells. In this configuration, a wind turbine, which is coupledwith a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), isconnected directly to a squirrel cage induction motor that drivesa centrifugal water pump. Moreover, the point-of-commoncoupling (PCC) is connected to an inverter to extract themaximum power under wind speed variations. The dc-side of theinverter is connected to a battery and the output of a boostconverter, which controls the Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) of the PV cells using a Perturb and Observe (P&O)technique. In this study, the use of a permanent magnetgenerator can generate better voltage and does not require acapacitor for excitation. The proposed inverter control scheme isachieved based on the constant ”V/f” control method. Theinverter is also responsible for stalling the turbine whenoperating above rated wind speed. The simulation resultsachieved by employing comprehensive models of the componentsdemonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
