The Unhardened Form: Actors in Pirandello’s Six Characters In Search of An Author

Prandello’s Six Characters In Search of An Author is a hallmark of Absurdist metatheatre. Right in the opening scene, the actors assemble for rehearsal. Their portrayal is insignificant, and this is only emphasized by the grand entrance of the “characters.” The play underwent changes from its beginning stage in ۱۹۲۱, and these changes increasingly portrayed the “characters” as completely distinguished from the “actors.” In his ۱۹۲۵ essay PIRANDELLO CONFESSES..., Pirandello aims to address “why” and “how” he wrote the play. His argument revolves around the characters as would be expected, but underlying this emphasis on the character is a lingering tension regarding the actors. Their existence rejects explanation, so Pirandello doesn’t attempt it. Here, we aim to take a magnifying look at the actors of a play that doesn’t want us to, and evaluate the implications of their insignificant yet certain presence when it comes to the life of ourselves.
