Abstract:

Recently, the linguistic resources used in academic text such as stance have attracted the researchers. Stance is a personal take of a position towards a claim or finding, and at the same time represents a community’s system of values. The academic stance shows the relationship between the self and community, and positioning, the relationship between the speaker and the text he produces. These expressed stances take the head position through noun complement structure. The head noun is a nominal complement clause which allows the writer to offer the attitude meaning through statements such as ‘the fact that’. The present article tried to explore the frequencies, forms, and functions of this structure in a corpus of ۵۰ research articles across ۱۱ different disciplines. Developing a new rhetorically based classification of stance nouns, the analysis revealed that there is not a variant structure used across stance nouns, while there is variation across the way that it is utilized to construct knowledge through different disciplines
