Abstract:

This research is an investigation of the effect of text-based and video based brainstorming on descriptive writing content and coherence in two experimental and one control groups. The number of ۱۰۰ EFL Iranian upper-intermediate learners participated in the study. The objective is to investigate the developmental aspects of coherence and content in descriptive writing based on text-based and video brainstorming. The analysis uses ANOVA, Reliability (inter-rater), Pearson Correlation, mean, and standard deviation. Main findings include the following: (a) video-based brainstorming develops descriptive writing content; (b) that text-based brainstorming develops descriptive writing content; (c) using video-based brainstorming is more effective than text-based brainstorming to improve writing content; (d) text-based brainstorming enhances descriptive writing coherence; (e) video-based brainstorming improves descriptive writing coherence; (f) there is not any significant difference between the effects of using video-based and text-based brainstorming on descriptive writing coherence. The substance and method of this study can provide a foundation for investigating subsequent topics with latent variables and different linguistic backgrounds and grade levels
