Abstract:

This comprehensive review article explores the effects of grit and self-esteem on academic performance and their implications in educational contexts, especially the potential implications it can have in an Iranian context. The study aims to synthesize empirical findings, identify research gaps, and propose strategies for fostering grit and promoting positive self-esteem among students. The results highlight the significant role of grit, characterized by passion and perseverance, in predicting academic success across various domains. Additionally, self-esteem emerges as a fundamental construct influencing individuals' thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, with both positive and negative self-esteem impacting academic performance. The limitations of relying solely on Grade Point Average (GPA) as a measure of academic performance are discussed as well. Through a comprehensive analysis of the literature, it is found that both grit and self-esteem significantly influence academic performance and can be strong predictors of students’ academic success. The implications of these findings include the need for interventions and strategies to enhance grit and self-esteem among students, as they contribute to academic success and well-being.
