Abstract:
Objective: Overweight and obesity is associated with insulin resistance and is the most important risk factor of type ۲ diabetes (T۲DM). In present study, we assessed glycemic profile and insulin resistance response to a short term aerobic training in middle-aged men with abdominal obesity.
Materials and Methods: The subjects included ۲۸ abdominally obese (waist circumference≥۱۰۲cm) middle-aged men (۳۹ ± ۵ year) that were divided into exercise (n=۱۴) or control (n=۱۴) groups by randomly. Exercise subject were completed a short-term aerobic training at ۵۵-۷۰ % of maximal heart rate (۶ weeks, ۳ times / weekly) and control subjects remained no training. Pre-training and post-training of anthropometrical markers, fasting glucose, hemoglobin (HbA۱C), insulin and insulin resistance were measured of ۲ groups and compared by independent – paired t test (SPSS, Version ۲۲.۰).
Results: Aerobic exercise resulted in a significant decrease in glucose level (۱۱۴ ± ۱۳ versus ۱۰۱ ± ۱۱ mg/dL, P: ۰.۰۰۹) and HbA۱C (۶.۱۴ ± ۱.۱۱ versus ۴.۹۱ ± ۱.۲۳, P: ۰.۰۲۱) in exercise group. But no significant changes were observed in insulin (۸.۳۱ ± ۴.۱۲ versus ۸.۲۹ ± ۳.۲۱, P: ۰.۱۱۹) and insulin resistance (۲.۳۴ ± ۰.۵۱ versus ۲.۰۷ ± ۰.۵۹, P: ۰.۰۷۳) in exercise groups.
Conclusion: Based on our finding, aerobic training independent of insulin function is associated with improved glucose in middle-aged obese men and this improvement can be attributed to other changes caused by exercise that requires further study in this area.
