Abstract:
titanium carbide nanopowder was synthesized by sol–gel method using tetra-n-butyl orthotitanateas titanium source and saccharose as carbon source. The sol-gel processes have been controlledby ethyl aceto acetate. Yellowish sol was placed in air for ۲۴ h under continuous stirring to get agel. A dried gel was obtained after the gel was heated in a temperature range of ۱۱۰–۱۲۰ ℃ for۱.۵ h. When heat-treated at ۵۴۰ ℃, gels transformed into intimately mixed amorphous carbon andnanosized tetragonal TiO۲. Further heat treatments above ۱۰۰۰ ℃-۱۲۰۰ ℃ led to the formation ofmagneli phases. Increasing the temperature to ۱۳۰۰ ℃ and ۱۴۰۰ ℃ led to formation of titaniumcarbonitrides and pure titanium carbide. Powders were assessed using X-ray diffraction, X-rayfluorescence (XRF) analysis, Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy. The average size of the TiC particles was found to be about ۴۰ nm.
