Abstract:

This study investigated the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI), sense of reading self-efficacy beliefs and burnout among 160 Iranian EFL university students. This is accomplished by building a causal structural model through which the relationships among these constructs are estimated. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that the proposed model has a good overall fit with the empirical data. Further analysis demonstrated that EQ is a positive and significant predictor of reading self-efficacy. On the other hand, EQ negatively and significantly predicts burnout. It was also found that reading self-efficacy has a significant but negative role in burnout. The findings also showed that EI is a better predictor of student burnout. Subsequent data analysis via regression showed that among the components of emotional intelligence, intrapersonal ability and general mood are the negative predictors of the students ‘burnout.
