Abstract:
Design the airport runways is one of the critical issues in civil engineering. Since too many procedures and standard has been published related to this topic. Federal Aviation Administration Method (FAA), Advisory Circular ۱۵۰-۵۳۲۰-۶D and ۶G is one the most common use for structural design of airport pavements. To design the structure of the pavement and define the materials, finally the total thickness of the pavement and each layer is essential. Base on this study, the most important factor in this procedure is Resilient Modulus (MR) of the subgrade layer because of Rutting effect above this layer and the influence on the total thickness of the whole structure, based on analytical and numerical analysis according to the standard mentioned above, it has been tried to design the structure of two important airports in Milan (Malpensa and Bergamo Airport), according to realistic values for the number of flights, type of aircraft and annual traffic to find a logical relationship between MR and total thickness of the pavements.
